First off, let’s say this about Internet polls. Based on our own scientific research here at Movie Smackdown, it appears that approximately 37.25 billion readers must land on your site to generate a single vote. Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration but, the point is, a lot of traffic must tramp its way through a site to get decent poll numbers. So each voter has a grave responsibility, representing that Silent Majority of opt-out readers.
This year’s poll of the Oscar favorites attracted hundreds of our most thoughtful readers (see how much we’re willing to pander to those activists?) and they have spoken. We asked them not to vote for the film they think will win but for the film they think should win. They’ve given us a statistical tie between “Inglourious Basterds” and “Avatar” with Tarantino’s film getting the official win. Here are the rest of the results:
MOVIE SMACKDOWN 2010 OSCAR POLL RESULTS
#1Â Â Â Â Inglourious Basterds 22.2%
#2Â Â Â Â Avatar 21.9%
#3Â Â Â Â The Hurt Locker 11.5%
#4Â Â Â Â Up 11.5%
#5Â Â Â Â Up in the Air 10.0%
#6Â Â Â Â Precious 7.0%
#7Â Â Â Â District 9 5.6%
#8Â Â Â Â The Blind Side 4.1%
#9Â Â Â Â A Serious Man 3.3%
#10 Â An Education 3.0%
Does this mean “Inglourious Basterds” is going to take home a trophy? Or even that “Avatar” will? Probably not. You see, not all our readers have seen “The Hurt Locker” but everybody who voted at the film Academy has, and they’ve seen the ads, and talked to their friends and watched the other awards shows. They seem likely to give it to that film most people have missed in the theaters.
On the other hand, upsets happen. That’s probably the main reason we watch the damn show anyway.
