On Arrival

January 19, 2012 Adam Gentry 2

Greetings from Park City, UT! The temperature’s currently 37 degrees Fahrenheit, the snow’s been falling fairly steadily, and the plows that clear that snow out are parked… yep, right outside the door of my condominium. Hello 6:00 a.m.! Ready to rock and roll?

The cinematic world is closing in on this little town even as I speak. Today’s a light day for me, as my screenings don’t begin until tomorrow morning. I’ve got an arm and a leg’s worth of screenings/events to cover this week, and I kinda can’t wait to dive into the pool and start swimming. Sure, the water’s cold at first, but once you’re in, you’re fine.

I’ll mostly be covering screenings at the Slamdance Film Festival, hosted at the Treasure Mountain Inn. When I’m not in the Slammer, I’ll be all over town at meetings, parties, post-events, and if there’s time, down the street at a Sundance screening or two. I’ll be bringing you highlights, buzz from around town, and a daily chronicle of my never-ending adventures. […]

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2012) -vs- The War Zone (1999)

British actress Tilda Swinton is best known here for her Oscar-winning supporting turn as an icy, villainous lawyer in Michael Clayton (2007), but neither the role nor the performance really demonstrates what this woman is capable of. Again and again, she’s shown a willingness to take on roles that would terrify most actresses, be it due to the subject matter, the character’s off-putting actions, or what the part physically demands (she is apparently comfortable with all manner of nudity and sex scenes; ever see Young Adam?), and it is this complete lack of fear or modesty combined with her striking physical features (alabaster skin, bright red hair, really damn tall) and just plain uniqueness that have made her such a darling of the independent film world. What We Thought of The Golden Globes…

January 16, 2012 Movie Smackdown 0

If Hollywood were some dysfunctional family unit, then Ricky Gervais is the crazy drunk uncle who comes to your house and tells inappropriate jokes that horrify and crack everybody up in equal measure. You don’t know whether to throw him out or tolerate him, until he crosses the line and says something about grandma’s nasty bathroom habits, and when he gets called on it, he’s had too much to drink already, and he storms off to the nearest hotel to sleep it off. Then, the next year, you all assume he should never be re-invited, but the memories have dimmed of the off-color jokes and all you remember is how much fun you had. […]

The Return of the Kings: Gervais-Crystal Smackdown

January 13, 2012 Bryce Zabel 0

In our Hollywood family, Billy Crystal, in contrast to Ricky Gervais, is the really funny older brother or family friend who tells great stories, knows a couple of magic tricks for the kids, can lead with “Happy Birthday” or “Hava Nagila” when called upon and, when the kids are out of earshot, is renowned for his annual telling of some off-color joke that is perfectly calibrated to shock but not really offend anyone. You know he won’t cross the line, really, because he’s a good guest — he’s come to the last eight dinners and each one was a warm memory, even if you can’t quite remember one from the other. They all kind of blend together but he’s so nice and, besides, he’ll show up even if you ask him late because that cute guy from the office can’t make it after all. He’s Jay Leno-safe, except that he can also sing and dance. […]

In Praise of… 50/50

January 11, 2012 Bryce Zabel 0

50/50 deserves every bit as much Oscar love as The Descendants which is going to get its share. Both films are about dealing with terrible news and living through those stages of grief and 50/50 more than holds its own in that comparison.

Instead Academy members will probably see 50/50 as a diversion for people in their 20s, as light and comedic, and as another Seth Rogen getting stoned kind of movie. Well, it is actually those things within its frames, but it is so much more. […]
